Since I have 3 televisions in the office (news junkie that I am), I like to brag about the one I have set up for Over the Air (OTA) and Free to Air (FTA)....
Over the Air everyone understands, it's the old antenna. However, because it's digital, we no longer have to deal with "snow". You either have a crystal clean picture, or you don't. Most channels are also broadcast in HD, and beside the normal 2, 4, 11, & 13 - these channels now have digital sub-channels (2-1, 4-2 etc).. There is a lot there.
My favorite is Free to Air Satellite. Over 250 FREE Channels. The hardware can be had for under $300 and it's very easy to install and maintain (this is a 30'-33" dish with a little motor and receiver).. Again, all digital and super clean.
While it's true, the majority of these channels are foreign or religious based channels, there's a lot of good stuff for geeks like me. For instance....
1. Al Jazzera English - One of my favorites. I actually find it less bias that Fox, CNN, or MSNBC.
2. CCTV - 24 hour English Language News Channel from Russia
3. Russia today - 24 hour English Language News Channel From Russia.
4. Press TV - 24 hour English Language News Channel From Iran.
5. Ebru - Kinda a combination of channels in the style of CNN/Kids Network/Discovery and History. Originally from Turkey, broadcasts now out of New Jersey. A great channel.
6. Pentagon Channel - Military based, but lots of good stuff (I watched the military version of Ultimate Fighting and the Cooking channel the other night)
7. CNC World - 24 Hour News from all over the world (base in China)
8. ABC NewsOne (2 channels) Unedited stories and Feeds from ABC News.
9. Patient TV - All Health related programming.
10. PBJ, Tuff TV, and RTV - 3 great channels of entertainment programming, old TV shows, sports, etc.
11. NBC Feeds - 3 regular channels from the NBC network. Entire NBC programming.
In addition, there are wild feeds that pop up everywhere. You never know what you will find!
IMO, this is well worth the $300 the system costs. If you are looking for something different, FTA and OTC is def cool to add on to what you got. In addition, if cable ever goes out, you're still watching TV!!
