It's been said that for the Republicans to win the Presidency back in 2016, they must move to the center, become a more inclusive, and pander to women, blacks, Hispanics, gays, and any other group who feels they should be treated differently than any other citizen.
I strongly disagree. Republicans lose when they forget who they are. Republicans do not need to become the Democratic Party-Lite. Romney moved to the center and lost. McCain started in the center, moved left and lost. Dole, Bush Sr. - all RINOs in the end lost. The terms "Republican" and "Conservative" are not interchangeable. I do not consider myself a republican, I am however a conservative - and I believe there are four basic principles all conservatives share and should be unwilling to ever compromise on:
1. The belief that ALL life is sacred - I believe abortion is murder and will never support a "pro-death" candidate.
2. Lower Taxes - I believe in Lower taxes for all Americans. Every time (EVERY SINGLE TIME) taxes have been lowered, revenues have gone up and the economy soared. JFK understood this well when he said :
“It is a paradoxical truth that tax rates are too high and tax revenues are too low and the soundest way to raise the revenues in the long run is to cut the rates now … Cutting taxes now is not to incur a budget deficit, but to achieve the more prosperous, expanding economy which can bring a budget surplus.”
3. Out of control entitlement spending. People need to learn to stand on their own two feet. Romney might of worded his famous 47% statement a little more eloquently, but he was 100% correct. The fact that there are "rich people" in America, and that new millionaires are created every year is a testament to the success of capitalism and the fact that hard work does in fact pay off. They earned their cash and should be under no obligation to hand it over to someone else. They, in a very true sense, have achieved the American dream. Let's get off of this Class Warfare/Jealousy nonsense.
4. A strong national defense. The government's main obligation to provide security to itself and it's allies. Remember again what that great "Liberal" JFK said in his inaugural address :
" Now the trumpet summons us again—not as a call to bear arms, though arms we need; not as a call to battle, though embattled we are—but a call to bear the burden of a long twilight struggle, year in and year out, "rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation"—a struggle against the common enemies of man: tyranny, poverty, disease, and war itself."
AND
"We dare not tempt them with weakness. For only when our arms are sufficient beyond doubt can we be certain beyond doubt that they will never be employed."
=-=-=-=
These are not radical proposals (as much as the today's Liberals try to convince us they are), they are not radial, racist, unfair, or outdated. These are four basic conservative principles that the majority of this (center-right) nation believes in - and what, despite the vilification by the left, groups such as the Tea Party stand for.
Governing America is not about scoring debate points, having better television commercials, promising entitlements, vilifying successful Americans, or how well you mobilize your campaign workers. Governing requires believing in a solid set of conservative principles (as outlined above), standing by them without compromise, and serving the people by sticking to those aforesaid principles.
Lastly, the Republicans need a new messenger. Not the "next person in line eg. Dole, McCain, Romney, - but a fresh face who can articulate these principles. No more Romney, Gingrich, Palin, Cain, Trump, Thompson, Huckabee, Santorum, or Ryan (All fine people but their time is over)....
Now's the time for fresh faces, Rubio, Jindal, or Nikki Haley. Chris Christie has, in my opinion, disqualified himself for national office and unless he plans on running for the Democratic nomination, I suspect he may have a future as full time groupie for Bruce Springsteen. Let's pick our candidate (I'm thinking Marco is the man) and get behind him/her NOW! Start raising the money and get him/her out there NOW!
There is a story that recalls as Benjamin Franklin emerged from Independence Hall at the close of the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia on September 18, 1787, a woman asked him, “Well Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?”.
Mr. Franklin replied, “A republic, madam – if you can keep it.”
In looking over the events of the past few months, I would submit that Mr. Franklin’s Republic is still intact. So far, the framework that was so brilliantly devised by those wise men over 200 years ago still stands as a testament to the spirit of freedom that all men and women hold dear to their hearts. But it will not last forever if we maintain our current course.
2016 may be our last chance. If the democrats win again in 2016, they'll be nothing left that even remotely resembles the great republic Frankin spoke of, and the founders gave us as their greatest gift.
